Loop/Copy/Mutate: I Am Legion (Software)

About:

Loop/Copy/Mutate: I Am Legion is an Artificial Intelligence singer modeled after the improvisational method of the Genetic Choir. The Legion listens to sounds and mimics them with a voice of its own, made up from vocal sounds donated by many contributors. Say something on the microphone, wait a few seconds, and then listen to how the software copies, loops, and mutates what it heard.

The software combines Machine Listening with Machine Learning to analyze, understand and respond to sound. The Legion is trained with a user-defined database of sounds, and can be instructed to focus on different sonic aspects: melodic contours, textures (i.e. timbral characteristics), or dynamics. The default database is 37 minutes long and was collected during Genetic Choir’s soundwalks at Amsterdam Central Station; it consists of participants’ vocalizations of the train station’s sounds. A second database used by the project is also provided, with vocalizations of Fransien Bal’s graphic poems by 28 contributors (39 minutes).

The software was created for ‘Loop-Copy-Mutate: Music from People and Places’, a project by the Genetic Choir in collaboration with Stelios Manousakis and Robert van Heuman. For more information visit the project page on this site, or on the Genetic Choir’s site.
